Homosexual and transgender Christians
Question
Will homosexual and transgender Christians go to hell for the sin of loving and being with the ones they love?
Answer
Love, as the apostle Paul said, is the greatest of all virtues – even greater than faith and hope (1 Corinthians 13:13). I’m talking here of love as agape – selfless love devoted to others – as used in that Bible verse, not of love as lust or erotic love. So no, I can’t see them as going to hell for demonstrating selfless love for one another, if that is what the question refers to.
As to whether such people are sinners, the Bible says we are all sinners and we’d all be on the road to hell, were it not for the fact that Jesus redeemed us on the cross (paid the price for us to be delivered from the consequences of sin): “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified [put right with God] freely by His grace through the Redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23-24). God has given us all this wonderful gift of having someone else pay the price for all the sins we have ever committed and ever will commit. We avoid going to hell for our sins by receiving that gift by faith: by believing and trusting in Jesus as to who He is and what He has done for us. With a firm trust in Jesus, the Lord will make clear to both homosexual and heterosexual Christians what their sins are and how to overcome them.
